Lets take a moment to look back on some of the best couples of the year! This is of course entirely subjective and all my opinion. Also spoilers for a lot of stuff sorry.
Also Mari and Kanan didn’t make the list but they get the header image and are amazing and wonderful. Just for the record.
(yes they’re all gay girls. My list, my rules)
Award for Best Performance of The Prince(ss) and the Pauper:
Ange and Princess from Princess Principal!
When these two identical strangers swapped places, little did they know they’d end up caught up in a coup and have to spend a decade living each other’s lives, under constant threat of discovery and likely death! Thankfully their reunion finally came, and while things were a little bumpy, they are now living happily in Casablanca and plotting to overthrow the British Empire
Award for Most Unlikely Cross-franchise Couple:
Alicetaria and Magical Slayer Mamika from Re:Creators!
Now it seems like a hardened knight from a world where death is always around the corner, and a magical girl from a children’s show would be an unlikely couple…and well you are right. Yet these two crossed genre and demographic boundaries to find something in each other they couldn’t find anywhere else. Good luck on your crossover movie!
Award for Best Polyamorous Relationship of more than 3 People:
Chiya, Kon, Koume and Nono from Urara Meirochou!
While Chiya and Kon make for a great couple, these four are best as a group. With levels of mutual trust and intimacy that shows how much they all trust and rely on each other. It takes a lot of work to make this kind of relationship happen, but they are resourceful girls, they’ll manage. Strive to be First Rank Urara together!
Award for Great Strides in Cross-Dimensional Diplomacy:
Kobayashi and Tohru from Kobayashi-san Chi no MaiDragon!
Little things like one of them being a dragon from a fantasy world can’t keep a good couple down, and Kobayashi isn’t going to let her dragon wife’s father try to dictate what they do with their life. Family can be many things, including a Programmer, a Dragon and a smaller Dragon.
The Yukine Chris “GO GET A ROOM ALREADY” Award for Outstanding Achievement in Public Displays of Affection:
Akatsuki Kirika and Tsukuyomi Shirabe from Senki Zesshou Symphogear AXZ!
Seriously get a damn room already!
Award for Largest Size Difference Between Partners:
Gennai Ao and Gourai from Frame Arms Girl!
Just because one of you is a human and the other is an eight-inch tall plastic model kit doesn’t mean that you can’t be girlfriends. Love crosses all boundaries, including size and construction material!
Odd Couple Award for the Relationship Most Surprising to Coworkers:
Ahagon Umiko and Sakura Nene from New Game!!
If you’d asked the Eagle Jump staff who Umiko was most likely to date, the flighty, unserious temp who she spends most of her time yelling at probably would not be the first choice. Love works in mysterious ways, and this odd couple is the most endearing in a cast full of great couples.
Award for Most Unexpected Couple in Episode 8 of the Second Season:
Kurosawa Ruby and Kazuno Leah from Love Live! Sunshine!!
When their eyes met in Leah’s room, it was clearly destiny. A couple never imagined before that moment sprung into being, rapidly becoming one of the best, most lovable pairs in the entire franchise. Two little sisters in the shadow of their older sisters, trying to move ahead in a life where they won’t have their sisters with them all the time. Ganbaruby, you two.
“And the Lesbians Shall Inherit the Earth” Award for Being Literally the Last Couple on Earth:
Chito and Yuuri from Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou!
Not the most uplifting award, for sure. In the ruins of a dying world, all these two have to rely on is each other. Their relationship goes beyond
Couple of the Year Award and Actually Kissed Onscreen Award:
Liones Yelistratova and Nina Alexandrovna from Hina Logi: From Luck & Logic!
Just like their show, Lion and Nina were a delight and a surprise. That Luck & Logic could spin off such a sweet, gentle show about a group of friends who also happened to be magical girls (but didn’t have anything to magical girl against) was one of the biggest surprises of the year. That alone would have made it fantastic, but Lion and Nina becoming a couple was icing on the cake. They are adorable and wonderful, and deserve all the happiness in the world.
